The students, legally present in the U.S., participated in pro-Palestine demonstrations on campus and published articles opposing the massacres committed by the occupation in Gaza. Documents used as evidence in the cases included various files and memoranda prepared by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, sent to the State Department, containing official recommendations to deport 5 students from the country. Among the targeted students were Turkish PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk at Tufts University and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a master’s student at Columbia University.
